How might we create a solution that enables India to embrace modernisation while preserving its cultural heritage, fostering a sense of community, and addressing the socio-emotional challenges of rural-to-urban migration?

What is the problem?

Modernization in India has driven economic growth and urbanization, transforming cities. However, rural-to-urban migration disrupted traditional village life, breaking joint families, eroding regional languages, and diminishing communal rituals, challenging the preservation of cultural heritage. Modernity in India introduced ideas that challenged traditional notions of self and society, which were deeply rooted in communal values.  Urbanization has shifted the focus toward individualism, altering India’s social, political, and economic concepts that once prioritized collective identity.

Key Challenges That Arise Due to Migration from Rural to Urban

I analysed the data and came up with some insights

Individualism vs. Communalism

Modernity’s focus on the individual conflicts with India’s communal values, leading to social friction and identity crises.

Loss of Culture

Migrants often lose traditions and support systems, leading to mental health issues.

Cultural Dissociation

The urban lifestyle erodes community ties, making it difficult for people to connect with their roots.

What kind of people experience cultural displacement through migration mostly?

I conducted quantitative & qualitative research to understand the socio-emotional challenges and modernization and its cultural impact in India

Through the interviews User Personas and Empathy Maps were created to humanise the data, uncover more findings of their emotional journey.

Our research revealed that educated, middle-class migrants in their 20s and 30s struggle to find “meaningful connections” in their new urban environments. They feel “lonely and culturally disconnected” and yearn for a sense of belonging and “social acknowledgement”.

The solution, ‘Re-Root’, was designed as a digital platform to bridge this gap. The three core pillars to guide the app’s functionality and address the key user pain points are

Reconnecting with Cultural Heritage

Enable users to rediscover and celebrate their traditions, festivals, and cuisine within a supportive community.

Fostering Connection and Belonging

Match users with individuals of similar backgrounds and personalities to build meaningful relationships and reduce isolation.

Enhancing Well-Being

Promote happiness and emotional health by blending modern lifestyles with cultural revival and shared experiences.

Profile Creation

Establishes cultural roots & enables personalized profile creation through AI gathering personality data and interests, matching users with others who share similar backgrounds and interests to foster meaningful connections.

Choose Communities

This screen allows users to find groups that match their places of origin (roots), interests and personality, immediately setting the stage for culture, connection and community.

This screen provides a detailed overview of the selected community, including its purpose, events, and members, giving the user the information they need to feel confident about joining and celebrating their culture.

Home Screen

Provides a central hub for all upcoming events, allowing users to easily view details, book tickets, and engage with their community, thus transforming the passive experience of cultural loss into an active journey of rediscovery. Showcases stories & pictures of events attended by community members.

The Location Connect in the Home screen allows to find nearby like-minded people, from the same region as you for convenient and meaningful interactions and celebrations of culture.

Explore People & Communities

The Explore screen allows users to discover new communities and people, with a focus on “compatibility levels”, ensuring that connections are genuine and relevant to their needs.

Host Events

Lets users host events of their interest with ease, offering planning tools and affordable community hubs placed across the city for secure celebrations.

The Re-Root app helps urban migrants in India reconnect with their cultural heritage, build community, and enhance their well-being by providing a platform for event discovery and new connections based on shared interests.
